About Hangdog

Hangdog Camp is a family-owned campground which has been providing accommodation for rock climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts since the late ’90’s. Situated 10 minutes’ walk from New Zealand’s premier sport climbing crag at Paines Ford, we provide low-cost minimal facility camping for those who enjoy living a little more basic.

Hangdog SignPrimarily catering for national and international rock climbers who come in search of Takaka’s climbing crags at Paines Ford and Pohara, Hangdog is a mainstay in the NZ climbing scene. People make annual pilgrimages from across the country- and sometimes the globe- to stay and climb here. We encourage you to come and experience a classic slice of the NZ climbing scene and test yourself against the 300+ bolted routes on Paines Ford’s notorious limestone crags. While you’re here, take a dip in our local swimming hole (best in the country) and poke your nose into the alternative and funky Golden Bay community and maybe get to know a few locals. We welcome anyone who has an interest in climbing- families, beginners, pro’s, and people from all corners of the globe.

Hangdog has developed a reputation as a fun and quirky campground and we take pride in fostering an environmentally responsible micro-community of honesty, respect and friendship amongst strangers. Here you can always be sure to find at least one of three things: love, progressive climbing grades or a mammoth hangover. No one will deny that a stay at Hangdog is always a memorable one. Better yet, Hangdog is a 100% yuppie free zone- not a single jetski has made it through the gates in our 20+ years of operation.

We are situated on State Highway 60 which runs down the Takaka River valley, where the Paines Ford bridge crosses the river. The funky township of Takaka, the “capital” of Golden Bay, is only 3.5 km away providing easy access to the supermarket, coffee houses, pharmacy, bottle stores and other necessities of the modern traveller.
